Media Is Suffering from ATD – Anti-Trump Disorder

You’re getting played. A bunch of journalists who fancy themselves the smartest people in any room they walk in can’t be this dumb. They’re getting schooled by a political rookie – a bombastic personality who is manipulating them at every turn. His tweets are like shiny objects. Each time he sends one, he prays on their Anti-Trump Disorder to distract them from the real stories the nation needs to hear.

My intent is not to make light of Attention Deficit Disorder, so don’t read this that way. ATD is an affliction similar to it – sufferers are so blind in their bias and hatred of the president that they will report anything that paints him in a negative light. Some of the reporting is deserved. Much of it comes from a mainstream media more interested in seeing him destroyed than America succeeding. That’s how far we’ve fallen.

The Master Manipulator

Trump is a lightning rod. He is different things to different people. What everyone should agree on (and still probably won’t) is that he’s a master manipulator when it comes to the media and exposure. He has always had a knack for keeping himself in the news and relevant in popular culture. That ability long predated his flirting with running for president…and winning the office.

So, it should surprise nobody that he didn’t abandon his Twitter account when he became president. He’s bypassing you. He’s keeping his base engaged. He’s trolling you about as well as the meme warriors on #CNNBlackmail are. Like it or hate it, it’s effective.

Make no mistake, if you never were a Trump supporter, you probably never will be. His message isn’t meant for you – it’s an “All Aboard!” whistle for the Trump Train and his legions of red hat wearing MAGA disciples. His tweets are like catnip for his base. They mock a mainstream media afflicted by Anti-Trump Disorder, and shout “Bravo!” as their guy assails they establishment they elected him to combat.

This is what makes ATD, and his masterful manipulation of it, so bad for the American people: with the media shouting at the wind at every comment that pops up on Trumps’ Twitter feed, they aren’t covering his presidency. The media aren’t reporting initiatives and policy efforts, good or bad, at the level they should be.

Sure, Trumpcare in the House and Senate got some play, mostly because the media could spin it as a negative. Ditto with the numerous court cases on the Muslim “travel ban.” Unfortunately, there is no honest policy discussion on either of those. Debate in this country has been replaced by a propaganda war, and it’s one Trump is winning.

Getting Under Their Skin – Using Anti-Trump Disorder

Why? Because every time the mainstream media becomes unhinged because of something he says, he proves his point. They are biased, unprincipled, fake news. The more people who believe that, the more who believe him. And so long as the ATD obsession with Russia, tweets, and his combative relationship with them continues, the freer he is to work his agenda without the diligent coverage and analysis that the American people need to make informed decisions.

Take the flap over the retweeted meme and CNN’s reaction to it. Somehow, this is exciting violence whereas Kathy Griffin holding up a mock-up of Trumps severed head is a legitimate joke. Please. The same people crying about the altered WWE WrestleMania video are the ones defending Griffin’s exercise of free speech. Imagine if a conservative comedian (do any exist?) had done that with Obama when he was in office. What do you think the reaction would have been? Answer honestly.

The flip side is also true. Had it been a video of Obama slam-dunking a FOX News logo, the right would have been equally offended. Democrats would be quick to point out that it never would have gotten tweeted because Obama was more presidential, and they would have been correct. Then again, when in history has so much vitriol from the mainstream media ever been directed at a president? Obama had his detractors, but be real…he never faced an onslaught like this. ATD is unprecedented.

Without an Unbiased Media, We’re Screwed

We need the mainstream media. An informed populace is critical to a healthy republic, which is why they earned the moniker, the “Fourth Estate.” Unfortunately, a significant part of the country feels that the media’s agenda is more important than the transmission of factual information about the world we live in. If this mess CNN has found itself in is any sign, maybe they are right.

The media must recover from its bout of ATD and start being journalists again. If Trump is the disaster they all claim he is, that should be all it takes to cause his undoing. By constantly beating the drum against him, the media is only helping his cause. In the process, they are doing an incredible disservice to the country that relies on them. That is the biggest tragedy of all.

Maybe it will take Kim Jong-Un to fire an ICBM at Seattle for the media to change how they cover, although I doubt it. More likely they will do what they’ve done since November – blame Trump as if he had launched the missile himself. ATD is like that. It’s also easy to manipulate, just ask the president. He’s managed to turn early morning tweets into breaking news events.
